A 39-year-old man suspected of critically injuring a woman in a stabbing in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday was taken into custody.

The attack was reported around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday near Hope Street and Olympic Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The woman was conscious and breathing when she was taken to a hospital, police said.

She was stabbed in the neck, according to a broadcast report.

The suspect ran in an unknown direction but was later located and taken into custody at about 2 p.m., police said.

He was later identified as Kenneth Gibson, who is expected to be charged with attempted murder for the unprovoked attack against the woman believed to be between 60 and 70 years old, the California Post reported, citing information from the LAPD.

The newspaper reported that the victim had undergone surgery during the afternoon, with police confirming that she was listed in critical condition.

LAPD Central Division Lt. James Mankey told the newspaper that a physician’s assistant in the area had rushed over to the woman after the attack and applied pressure to her neck, which ”assisted in saving the victim’s life.”
