A 57-year-old man suspected of driving under the influence was hospitalized Thursday after he crashed his vehicle into a utility pole, prompting a power outage and a road closure in Indio.
The crash was reported shortly after 5:30 a.m. Thursday on Avenue 42, west of Golf Center Parkway, according to the Indio Police Department.
A Kia van being driven at an unconfirmed speed veered off the roadway for unknown reasons and sheared off a utility pole, which resulted in a power outage for some nearby residents, police said.
The driver, who was not identified, sustained injuries and was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs with stable vital signs. The severity of the injuries was not immediately known.
“The man was arrested, cited and released at the hospital for DUI,” the department stated.
Eastbound Avenue 42 between Calhoun Street and Golf Center Parkway was temporarily closed while Imperial Irrigation District crew members replaced the utility pole.
