An investigation was underway Thursday into the death of an 88-year-old man who was run down by a hit-and-run driver in the South Park East neighborhood east of the Harbor (110) Freeway.
The fatal crash was reported about 7:35 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Avalon Boulevard and 49th Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
A vehicle described as a possibly black sedan headed north on Avalon hit the man as he walked in a marked crosswalk on the north side of East 49th Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The motorist did not stop.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics took the victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
