Rescue swimmers making their way to a person spotted on the beach below the Point Fermin Bluffs in San Pedro Sunday discovered that the person was dead at the scene, authorities said.

Fire personnel, including a helicopter, were dispatched at 8:41 a.m. Sunday to 1 Point Fermin, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Rescue swimmers made contact with the person on the beach below the Point Fermin Bluffs, and determined that the male patient was beyond medical help. The person, whose age was not provided, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The operation is now transitioning to a body recovery, utilizing LAFD Air Ops in a hoist operation,” the LAFD’s Jennifer Middleton said. “The decedent will be respectfully relocated to a predetermined location for LAPD/LA County Medical Examiner to transfer to their care.”
