A felon accused of trying to kill a Riverside man during a confrontation near the city’s airport must stand trial for attempted murder and other charges, a judge ruled Tuesday.
Paul Chacon Workman, 40, of Riverside, was arrested last October following a Riverside Police Department investigation.
At the end of a preliminary hearing Tuesday, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Timothy Hollenhorst found there was sufficient evidence to bound Workman over for trial on the attempted murder count, as well as firearm assault and sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations.
The judge scheduled a post-preliminary hearing arraignment for April 22 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.
The defendant was being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Robert Presley Jail.
According to police spokesman Officer Ryan Railsback, just before 6 p.m. Oct. 24, Workman and the victim, identified only as a man in his 40s, were involved in an unspecified dispute outside a vacant building in the 6100 block of Van Buren Boulevard, roughly a half-mile south of Riverside Municipal Airport.
During the confrontation, the defendant allegedly pulled a handgun and opened fire, inflicting several gunshot wounds, then fleeing the location, Railsback said.
The victim was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where he remained under intensive care for weeks before staging a recovery.
Robbery-Homicide Unit detectives soon identified Workman as the alleged assailant, though no further details were disclosed by police, including a possible motive.
Railsback said the defendant was located the following afternoon on East 40th Street in San Bernardino, where he was taken into custody without incident.
Court records indicated he has several prior felony convictions, but they weren’t specified.
