After an hours-long search, a man suspected of fatally stabbing his 35-year-old girlfriend in Sylmar was arrested Thursday.

The arrest came as officers conducted a perimeter search near an apartment complex where the man suspected of killing his girlfriend was spotted. Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to 13826 Beaver St., at Dronfield Avenue and near the Foothill (210) Freeway, at 9:21 p.m. Wednesday regarding a stabbing. Witnesses told police the victim was stabbed by a man who ran away from the scene, an officer told City News Service.

The victim was found suffering from multiple stab wounds during a welfare check. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Video from the scene showed Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics rushing her into an ambulance.

Around 5 a.m. Thursday, officers descended on the area of Hubbard and Eighth Street, about four miles from the murder scene, and set up a perimeter as they searched for the man. It encompassed the grounds of Gridley-Montanez Dual Language Academy.

“Due to ongoing police activity in the area, the students and staff from Gridley-Montanez Dual Language Academy will be relocated temporarily to Maclay Middle School,” according to a statement from the Los Angeles Unified School District. “There will be additional staff onsite to assist and support.”

School administrators “remain in communication with local authorities for important updates about our local community,” according to a statement issued to parents.

By 10 a.m., the suspect was in custody, according to the LAPD. His name was not immediately released.

The school was reopened soon after.
