A garbage truck sprung a leak from its compressed natural gas fuel tank after a crash in Sylmar Friday, prompting a precautionary shelter-in-place request for nearby residents.
About 8:10 a.m. Friday, crews were called to the scene at 13351 W. Hubbard St., near Hubbard Street Elementary School, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Jennifer Middleton.
The truck’s damaged tank was “off-gassing” the pressurized fuel when crews arrived, she said, adding that nearby residents were asked to shelter-in-place out of an abundance of caution.
An LAFD hazardous materials crew monitored the air, but detected no unsafe levels, Middleton said.
By 9 a.m., the situation was described as “static.”
“The CNG tank is now holding pressure and no longer off-gassing or posing any hazards,” Middleton said. “All local shelter-in-place notifications have been lifted.”
A tow truck was called to remove the trash hauler.
