A brush fire that broke out Wednesday in the Santa Ana River bottom on the west end of Jurupa Valley scorched nearly an acre before crews got it partially contained.

The non-injury blaze was reported shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Mann and Limonite avenues, just northwest of the Hidden Valley Nature Center, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said multiple engine and hand crews from the county and city of Riverside were sent to the location and encountered slow-moving flames in heavy vegetation.

Firefighters had to push through thick overgrowth to reach the brusher, which posed no immediate threat to surrounding homes or other structures, according to reports from the scene.

A Cal Fire water-dropping helicopter was summoned to make targeted drops.

By 1:30 p.m., crews had established a partial line around the blaze. Full containment was expected by mid-afternoon.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. However, the river bottom is replete with homeless encampments, and cooking, warming and debris fires are common year-round.
