Overnight closures on the westbound Pomona (60) Freeway in Diamond Bar will get underway next week, according to the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments.
All lanes on the westbound freeway will be fully closed between Lemon Avenue and Diamond Bar Boulevard beginning Sept. 12.
With the recent completion of closures on the eastbound 60, focus now shifts to the westbound side, with weekend closures scheduled through the end of September, officials said.
“The closures are necessary to safely accommodate ongoing construction activities and advance improvements designed to enhance safety, improve traffic flow and reduce congestion at one of the region’s most heavily traveled and hazardous freeway interchanges,” according to an SGVCOG statement.
The closures will occur from 12:01-6 a.m. Saturdays and from 12:01-8 a.m. Sundays on Sept. 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27.
The following will also be closed:
— Westbound 60 Diamond Bar Boulevard on-ramp;
— Westbound 60 Grand Avenue off- and on-ramps;
— Southbound Orange (57) Freeway connector to the westbound 60; and
— Westbound 60 connector to the southbound 57.
The Grand Avenue Bridge will remain open during all closure windows.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes or allow for extra driving time.
The work is part of the 57/60 Confluence Project, “a major safety and traffic improvement effort led by the SGVCOG in partnership with LA Metro and Caltrans,” according to the SGVCOG.
The two-mile stretch of freeway has been called one of the worst truck bottlenecks in the United States, with approximately 350,00 vehicles passing through each day, officials said.
Caltrans had incorrectly announced the closures would begin during Labor Day weekend and that the Grand Avenue Bridge would be closed, but on Friday, the agency announced that no full closures would occur Sept. 5 and 6, and that the bridge would remain open during all closure windows.
No full freeway closures will occur over Labor Day Weekend.
