It’s been one award after another for the Paul Thomas Anderson-helmed white-knuckler, “One Battle After Another,” and Saturday evening was no exception, as the Producers Guild endowed the movie with its top prize at the 37th annual PGA Awards at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Century City.
The PGA honor for theatrical motion pictures is traditionally a strong indicator of which film will win the best picture Oscar. Since the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expanded from five to 10 nominees in 2010, only four films have won the best picture Oscar without first winning the PGA Award. Last year, both honors went to “Anora.”
According to the PGA, 17 of the previous 22 winners of the guild’s motion award have won the best picture prize at the Oscars.
Other nominees that were considered competitive for the guild’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures included “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet” and “Sinners.” Also nominated were “Bugonia,” “F1,” “Marty Supreme,” “Sentimental Value,” “Train Dreams” and “Weapons.”
On the small screen, drama television, “The Pitt” beat out “Pluribus,” “Severance” and “The White Lotus, among others, to continue its awards-gathering. On the comedy side, “The Studio” continued its run of success this awards season.
Presenters included Amy Madigan, Delroy Lindo, Elle Fanning, Emily V Gordon, Greta Gerwig, Ike Barinholtz, Jacob Elordi, Jason Ritter, Jessie Buckley, Joachim Trier, Kate Hudson, Kerry Condon, Kumail Nanjiani, Lisa Gilroy, Mariska Hargitay, Michael Keaton, Paul Mescal, Ralph Farquhar, Regina Hall, Seth Rogen, Teyana Taylor, Thomas Lennon, Vinny Thomas, Wagner Moura, William H. Macy and Wumni Mosaku
