Director Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” will carry a record seven nominations into Sunday evening’s presentation of the 32nd annual Actor Awards, formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards, including a nod in the top category of best ensemble cast — the equivalent of Oscar’s Best Picture.
Nominated along with “One Battle After Another” for best ensemble film cast — The Actor Awards’ equivalent of best picture — are “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme” and “Sinners.”
“One Battle” also has nods for best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, best actress for Chase Infiniti, supporting actor for Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn and supporting actress for Teyana Taylor.
The previous record for nominations in a single year for a film was five, a feat achieved by six films — “Shakespeare in Love,” “Chicago,” “Doubt,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Wicked.”
Also vying for the best actor prize will be Timothée Chalamet for “Marty Supreme,” Ethan Hawke for “Blue Moon,” Michael B. Jordan for his dual role in “Sinners” and Jesse Plemons for “Bugonia.”
Along with Infiniti, nominees for lead actress are Jessie Buckley for “Hamnet,” Rose Byrne for “If I Had Legs I’d Kill You,” Kate Hudson for “Song Sung Blue” and Emma Stone for “Bugonia.”
Among television nominees, Apple TV+’s “The Studio” — which won a record 13 Emmy Awards in September — was nominated for outstanding ensemble cast in a comedy series, along with ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” FX’s “The Bear,” HBO’s “Hacks” and Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.”
“The Studio” leads all television nominees with five nods.
Competing for outstanding drama series ensemble are Netflix’s “The Diplomat,” Paramount+’s “Landman,” HBO’s “The Pitt,” Apple TV+’s “Severance” and HBO’s “The White Lotus.”
Emmy-winning “The Pitt” star Noah Wyle is nominated for best male actor in a drama series, as are Sterling K. Brown for “Paradise,” Billy Crudup for “The Morning Show,” Walton Goggins for “The White Lotus” and Gary Oldman for “Slow Horses.”
For lead actress in a drama, nominees are Britt Lower for “Severance,” Parker Posey and Aimee Lou Wood for “The White Lotus,” Keri Russell for “The Diplomat” and Rhea Seehorn for “Pluribus.”
Vying for the comedy series actress prize are Kathryn Hahn and the late Catherine O’Hara for “The Studio,” Jenna Ortega for “Wednesday,” Jean Smart for “Hacks” and Kristen Wiig for “Palm Royale.”
“The Studio” creator Seth Rogen is nominated for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series, along with his co-star, Ike Barinholtz. Also nominated are Adam Brody for “Nobody Wants This,” Ted Danson for “A Man on the Inside” and Martin Short for “Only Murders in the Building.”
The Actor Awards will be presented at the Shrine Auditorium, streaming live on Netflix.
The awards have often been deemed the most coveted among performers, since they are voted upon solely by other actors.
Harrison Ford, who personified two of cinema’s most iconic characters in Han Solo and Indiana Jones, will receive the 61st SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award during the event to recognize his career and humanitarian work. The award honors a performer who fosters the “finest ideals of the acting profession,” according to SAG-AFTRA.
SAG-AFTRA announced in November that the annual awards show’s name was being changed to “The Actor Awards presented by SAG-AFTRA.” The guild noted that after SAG merged with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists union in 2012, becoming SAG-AFTRA, the awards show maintained the name SAG Awards. With the new name, “we’re finally able to fully recognize that merger and align it with the name of our statuette, The Actor,” according to the guild.
