A man who allegedly carjacked a box truck in the Baldwin Village area — leading to the death of a man who held onto the side of the moving truck and was ultimately run over by the vehicle — remained jailed without bail Monday.

Bryan Rodriguez, 33, of Los Angeles, allegedly carjacked the white truck around 11:35 a.m. Friday near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Buckingham Road, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The 59-year-old man who had been using the truck clung to the side of the vehicle as the suspect drove off, police said.

The victim managed to hold onto the vehicle, prompting multiple 911 calls to police, who caught up with the truck in the area of Florence Avenue at Broadway, where the victim fell from the vehicle and was run over by the truck, police said.

The man, whose name was being withheld pending notification of relatives, died at a hospital.

Officers continued to pursue the truck, deploying multiple spike strips that eventually brought the vehicle to a stop near Normandie and Vernon avenues, where Rodriguez was taken into custody, police said.

He was being held without bail, according to police and jail records, pending word on possible criminal charges.
