Two people were evacuated from their home Monday when a contractor damaged a 1-inch natural gas pipeline in the Larchmont area of Los Angeles.

Southern California Gas Co. officials were notified at about 11:20 a.m. about the leak in the 1100 block of North El Centri Avenue, according to spokesman Aaron Oritz.

Oritz said crews managed to stop the leak at about 12:45 p.m., then remained at the scene to complete the final repair, noting that there were no reports of safety risks.

At least 18 natural gas customers were reported to be without service in the area as of 4:25 p.m.

According to Oritz, SoCalGas officials will begin restoring services to customers once the pipeline repair work is completed.

“Residents and businesses in the area may smell a natural gas odor while crews make repairs,” he said.

SoCalGas officials reminded community members to call 811 before they plan to dig at construction sites or in a yard to avoid possible damage to hidden utility lines.
