Three rehabilated sea lion pups will be returned to the sea in Redondo Beach Friday morning.

The release will coincide with a news conference on the Redondo Beach Pier at 100 Fisherman’s Wharf, where legislation sponsored by Sen. Laura Richardson to name the California sea lion the Official State Pinniped, will be announced.

Over 100 people were expected to be on hand with Richardson, Redondo Beach Mayor Jim Light, Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles CEO John Warner and others at Redondo Pier for the release of the three pups.

Prior to the release, Senator Richardson will announce SB 1286, legislation that would establish the California sea lion as the official state pinniped.

“The event will highlight the important role California sea lions play in the state’s coastal ecosystem and underscore the need to recognize and protect California’s most iconic marine mammal,” according to a statement from event organizers.

The three sea lions were rescued by MMCC.
