Writer/producer/director James L. Brooks, known for a storied career that includes work on shows such as “Taxi,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Simpsons” and films including “Broadcast News” and “Terms of Endearment,” will receive the inaugural Industry Icon Award at the Peabody Awards ceremony next month in Beverly Hills.
“James L. Brooks has shaped the way we understand television as both an art form and a cultural force,” Jeffrey Jones, executive director of the Peabody Awards, said in a statement Wednesday announcing the honor. “His work blends humor, humanity, and sharp social insight in ways that have influenced generations of storytellers. It’s an honor to recognize his extraordinary legacy with the inaugural Industry Icon Award.”
Peabody officials said the honor is in recognition of Brooks’ “enduring impact and leadership in shaping the media landscape.”
Brooks is a 21-time Emmy Award winner, and he won a trio of Oscars for producing, writing and directing “Terms of Endearment.” His TV career also includes work on shows such as “Room 222,” “Lou Grant,” “Rhoda,” and “Phyllis,” along with writing credits for shows including “My Three Sons,” “That Girl,” “The Andy Griffith Show,” “The Doris Day Show” and “My Mother the Car.”
“The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “Lou Grant” and “The Simpsons” are all previous Peabody Award winners.
The Peabody Awards ceremony will be held May 31 at the Beverly Wilshire. Nominations will be announced on April 7 and April 9, and the winners will be announced later this month. The awards are produced by the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
Also during the May ceremony, actress/comedian Amy Poehler will receive a Career Achievement Award, producer/director/writer Sterlin Harjo will receive a Trailblazer Award and PBS Kids will receive the Peabody Institutional Award.
