The city of La Cañada Flintridge announced Wednesday it will begin accepting applications Sept. 14 for the City Council seat being vacated by Councilmember Keith Eich.

Eich’s resignation will take effect Oct. 5. A reason for his resignation has not been publicly disclosed.

Under the La Cañada Flintridge Municipal Code, the council must fill the vacancy within 30 days, either through an appointment or by calling a special election. The council decided Tuesday to accept applications from qualified residents for an appointment to the seat.

The person appointed will serve the remainder of Eich’s term, which expires in March 2028.

Applicants must be La Cañada Flintridge residents and registered voters. A replacement will be selected by a majority vote of the City Council, according to the city.

Applications will be accepted beginning Sept. 14, with a deadline of 5 p.m. Oct. 2. Applicants will be invited to interviews during a special City Council meeting, with the date still to be determined.

Candidates will have an opportunity to present their qualifications and suitability for the position. The council may make its decision during that meeting or defer the appointment to a future meeting, officials said.

The appointment and oath of office must occur within the 30-day period, with the city listing Nov. 4 as the deadline for the appointment.

Digital applications will be available beginning Sept. 14 at the city’s website at lcf.ca.gov/city-clerk/city-council/. Printed applications also will be available at the City Clerk’s Office.
