The Los Angeles Sparks fired coach Lynne Roberts Friday following another season in which the team missed the playoffs.
“We are grateful to Lynne for the commitment and determination she brought to the role, which was evident all the way through our last game last night,” Sparks Special Adviser Farhan Zaidi said in a statement posted on social media. “Lynne has cared deeply about our organization and for our players and their development. We sincerely thank her for everything she has invested in the Sparks and wish her and her family the best moving forward.”
Roberts spent two seasons leading the Sparks, compiling a 36-49 record overall. The team finished the current season Thursday night with a 76-75 loss to Golden State, giving the team a 16-28 record on the year.
Roberts previously coached the Utah Utes women’s basketball team, leading the squad to three NCAA tournament appearances. Prior to that, Roberts served as an assistant coach for her alma mater, Seattle Pacific University, then coached at Chico State and University of the Pacific before joining Utah in 2015, remaining there through 2024.
The Sparks have not made the WNBA playoffs since 2020. The team has won three WNBA titles, in 2001, 2002 and 2016.
