An overnight closure is planned this weekend to accommodate road construction on the Pomona (60) Freeway in Diamond Bar.

A full closure of eastbound lanes between Lemon and Grand avenues is scheduled to begin at midnight Saturday and last until 6 a.m. the same day. Southbound lanes will be closed again from midnight to 8 a.m. Sunday.

In addition, there will be closures on connectors and on- and off-ramps in the area, where the 60 and Orange (57) Freeways meet.

Officials say safety and traffic improvements will result from the completed project, which is being undertaken by the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments, L.A. Metro and Caltrans.

According to the American Transportation Research Institute, the two-mile long stretch of highway is ranked as the worst truck bottleneck in California and the seventh-worst in the nation.

“This project will fix dangerous merging patterns between trucks and commuters, and reduce traffic congestion to make one of the nation’s busiest corridors, carrying approximately 350,00 vehicles a day, safer for everyone,” according to an SGVCOG statement.
