A fire that began in a mulch pile in downtown Riverside consumed about an acre and prompted lane closures on the Pomona (60) Freeway before it was stopped.
The non-injury blaze was reported at 1:28 p.m. along the shoulder of the eastbound 60, near the transition to the Riverside (91) Freeway, according to the Riverside Fire Department.
The agency said that multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames raging in a large mulch pile behind a mobile home, extending into shrubs and trees adjacent to the freeway.
No structures were threatened.
California Highway Patrol officers shut down two lanes on the eastbound 60 for public safety.
At 1:50 p.m., the fire’s forward rate of spread was stopped, and the blaze was almost completely contained.
Crews were expected to finish mopping up by 4 p.m.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
