A 57-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed when she stepped into the path of an oncoming vehicle at a Lakeland Village intersection, authorities said Wednesday.

Danielle Leveque, an itinerant, was fatally injured just after 11 p.m. Monday at Grand Avenue and Stoneman Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Brian Seel said Leveque was walking southbound on Grand when she abruptly stepped into traffic passing through the intersection.

Seel said a 33-year-old motorist at the wheel of a 2010 Toyota Prius was traveling southbound on Grand at an estimated 45 mph and encountered the victim in front of her without warning, apparently leaving no time to brake or swerve.

The resulting impact flung the pedestrian a short distance south of Stoneman. The Prius driver, identified only as a Lake Elsinore resident, immediately stopped and waited for first responders. She wasn’t hurt.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics pronounced Leveque dead at the scene 10 minutes later.

The motorist was questioned by officers and revealed no signs of being under the influence, according to Seel. She was not arrested.

“It is unknown at this time if the (victim) was intoxicated,” Seel said.

An autopsy was pending Wednesday.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to contact the CHP’s Temecula office at 951-466-4300.

  1. I’m not sure what her being an itinerant had to do with her passing, or why it was even necessary to include information like that when discussing on a public forum about her death. I also think the picture above is tacky and lacks cooth. . almost offensive. . why not try to be a better person and be empathetic for all involved.
