Riverside County residents interested in learning and applying techniques about composting in their own backyards can attend a free class and workshop next week in Moreno Valley.

The Riverside County Department of Waste Resources will host a class and subsequent workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 7 at the department’s headquarters, located at 14310 Frederick St.

Participants will learn about how to recycle organic materials, including yard trimmings and fruit and vegetable waste into a nutrient-rich soil amendment, and how to maintain a compost bin or pile at home.

In addition, attendees will be taught about vermicomposting, a process of breaking down organic waste through the use of Red Wiggler worms.

Organizers said the department’s certified master composter instructors and volunteer master composters will teach residents on how to set up, build, care and harvest worm casting to use as a natural fertilizer.

Participants must be at least 14 years old. No registration will be required.

Compost bins and worm bin kits will be available for purchase, with a limit of three per household, officials said.

Anyone interested in learning more was urged to call the department at 951-486-3200.
