A motorist was killed Thursday when his pickup truck slammed into a street sweeper in Winchester.

The fatality occurred just after 6 a.m. Thursday on westbound Domenigoni Parkway, less than a quarter-mile east of Prairie Loop Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The agency said that the Toyota Tacoma pickup was traveling at an unconfirmed speed when it plowed into the 33,000-pound sweeper from behind, shearing off part of the cab of the smaller vehicle.

Riverside County Fire Department crews reached the location minutes later and pronounced the pickup driver, whose identity was not immediately released, dead at the scene.

The sweeper operator was not hurt. However, the vehicle sustained damage.

Menifee police officers shut down the westbound side of Domenigoni in Menifee at the request of the CHP, whose officers initiated a preliminary investigation, along with county coroner’s office personnel.

The wreckage was cleared and the investigation concluded four hours later. The westbound closure was lifted at 10:25 a.m.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the San Gorgonio CHP office at 951-846-5300.
