The intersection outside the first Film Roman office in Toluca Lake will be dedicated Monday as Phil Roman Square in honor of the six-time Emmy-winning animator, one day after his 95th birthday.

Roman will be joined at the 11 a.m. ceremony on the southwest corner of Riverside Drive and Ponca Avenue relatives, friends, industry colleagues and Councilman Adrin Nazarian, who introduced the motion designating the square in Roman’s honor.

Born Dec. 21, 1930, in Fresno to parents from Mexico, Roman began his career in 1955 as an assistant animator for the Disney animated classic “Sleeping Beauty.”

Roman then worked for Chuck Jones, best known for his work on Warner Bros. cartoons.

Roman directed 13 “Peanuts” animated specials between 1973 and 1983.

Roman founded the Film Roman studio in 1984, which would produce the “Garfield” animated specials, which brought him his first three Emmys, and the “Garfield and Friends” animated series.

He was the animation executive producer for “The Simpsons” from 1992-99, winning three more Emmys.
