The 44th annual Lotus Festival wraps up Sunday at Echo Park Lake with the inaugural Lotus Flower 5K Run/Walk.
The 8 a.m. fun run, which will accommodate runners of all fitness levels, is being presented by Aztlan Athletics in partnership with the Lotus Festival and the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. It is limited to the first 1,000 participants who register early.
The 5K comes on the final day of the Lotus Festival, which began Saturday and is billed by organizers as a blend of cultural performances, competitions and interactive experiences celebrating the beauty and diversity of Los Angeles’ Asian and Pacific Islander communities.
This year the two-day event is celebrating the people and culture of South Korea. Musicians, dance companies and others will perform throughout the festival, which will also include a food court with vendors offering traditional dishes and sweets, dragon boat races, community booths, boutiques and a beer and wine garden.
It will also include such children’s activities as arts and crafts, face painting, a rock wall and carnival rides.
The festival’s signature event, the Lights of Dreams Festival, begins at 1 p.m. It is an adaptation of the Korean Jinju Lantern Festival, which dates back to the 1500s when the people of Jinju would light lanterns wishing for a safe return of their family members during the Japanese invasion.
The Lights of Dreams Festival includes rice paper lanterns and custom-made lotus lanterns. In Asian cultures, illuminated paper lanterns symbolize their hope for a brighter future, appreciation for loved ones, and memories of those who have died; while lotus lanterns represent rebirth, purity and life.
Sunday performers will include Hi Desert Yoga, Rise Kohyang Band, Rio MF Dio and the Just Friends Jazz Ensemble.
The festival hours are noon to 8 p.m. Sunday. Admission and most activities and performances are free.
Limited street parking is available around Echo Park Lake. Shuttle service will be provided from various nearby parking locations.
The festival began in 1972, when it was known as “The Day of the Lotus.” The recreation department and the Council of Oriental Organizations timed the event with the blooming of the lotus flowers at Echo Park Lake.
In 1990, it was renamed “The Lotus Festival,” and the Lotus Festival Advisory Board was created to feature representatives from various API communities.
Lotus flowers have been part of Echo Park Lake for more than a century, dating back as early as 1891, department officials said. Some theories suggest the flowers were planted between 1923 and 1924 by missionaries from the Angels Temple using lotus seeds from China.
