A four-vehicle collision Tuesday reportedly stemming from a tow truck trying to make an emergency stop on the Pomona (60) Freeway in Jurupa Valley left the tow vehicle stuck underneath a tractor-trailer, forcing lane closures that spanned hours.

The wreck was reported at 8:29 a.m. Tuesday on the westbound freeway, just east of Rubidoux Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The agency said a tow truck driver was attempting to make a stop in the slow lane to retrieve a disabled vehicle when he impacted a big rig, causing a Subaru SUV and Honda Civic to collide next to the tow truck, scattering debris across all westbound lanes.

The front end of the tow truck, which was transporting two vehicles, was jammed well underneath the semi as a result of the collision, according to the CHP. The tow truck driver self-extricated.

All westbound lanes were temporarily blocked. However, CHP officers opened the HOV and fast lanes a short time later.

Several of the involved parties indicated they had unspecified minor injuries, but they declined to be taken to a hospital for further examination, according to reports from the scene

The CHP said multiple vehicles were hit by debris thrown from the original crash, and those motorists pulled to the shoulder a short distance from the collision scene. No one was injured, but there was reportedly vehicular damage.

As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, crews were still attempting to dislodge the tow truck from beneath the tractor-trailer, requiring closure of the westbound 60 slow lane.

  1. I saw the accident, the tow truck driver was pulled over next to the carpool lane. Jumped into traffic driving recklessly honking the loud truck horn and almost hit cars on the 2 left lanes. When he got on the slow lane he slammed into multiple vehicles as he was going to fast. He is a moron
