An armed man threatening to harm himself was fatally shot by Los Angeles Police Department officers after allegedly advancing toward them with a knife Thursday in Hollywood, police said.

Officers from the Hollywood Division were dispatched at 3:35 p.m. Thursday to an apartment complex in the 1400 block of North Bronson Avenue, near Sunset Boulevard, to reports of a ”possible suicide” suspect, police said.

The responding officers discovered upon arrival that the man was armed with a knife, prompting officers to use a 40mm less-lethal foam launcher to subdue him, but without effect.

Police said the suspect subsequently began to charge at officers, and an “officer-involved shooting” occurred, police said.

The suspect was struck by gunfire and taken into custody.

Paramedics took the man to a hospital, where he later died as a result of his injuries.

No officers or bystanders were injured during the shooting.

Detectives recovered the knife at the scene and booked it as evidence.

The shooting investigation was expected to impact the area of North Bronson Avenue from Sunset Boulevard to Fountain Avenue for several hours, police said.
