Police shot a suspect Friday during a confrontation in downtown Los Angeles and an investigation was underway.

Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Division conducted a 3:30 a.m. Friday stop Friday at Eighth Street and Gladys Avenue on a Nissan Sentra that had been reported stolen, according to an LAPD statement.

The two men in the car did not cooperate with officers who worked to get them out, police said.

The man in the passenger seat was seen “manipulating items in front of him, one of which appeared to be a handgun, and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” the police statement read.

Police arrested one suspect at the scene. The wounded man was taken to a hospital with stable vital signs by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics, according to an LAPD official at the scene.

The apparent handgun remained at the scene, will be analyzed by the Firearms Analysis Unit then booked as evidence, police said.

No officers or bystanders were injured during the shooting. Eighth and Ninth streets at Gladys Avenue and other streets in the area were closed while police conducted their investigation of the shooting.
