Santa Anita Park canceled live racing for the second consecutive day Sunday due to the ongoing rain in the Southland.

The Arcadia track also canceled live racing on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day due to heavy rainfall. Officials said the storm has dropped more than 10 inches of rain on the track since Dec. 23.

“The weather is set to improve significantly by Monday, and we don’t have any rain in sight for the next 10 days or so,” Nate Newby, Santa Anita Park’s general manager, said in a statement Sunday. “We are grateful for the support of our stakeholders these last two weeks. It hasn’t been easy, but the safety of the horses will always come first. We’re looking forward to building on the strong momentum from our first few days and getting back to business.”

Santa Anita saw its largest opening day crowd in nine years when 41,962 people showed up on Dec. 28.

A make-up day for Saturday’s races has been set for Jan. 15. This is in addition to the previously announced addition of live racing on Thursday, Jan. 8.
