The 3.6-mile stretch of Topanga Canyon Boulevard between Pacific Coast Highway and Grand View Drive will be closed at 5 a.m. Thursday due to the storm approaching the area, Caltrans announced.

The precautionary closure is tied to forecasts calling for steady rainfall that could trigger debris flows in recently burned and storm-damaged areas.

Meteorologists are predicting a strong chance of rain, with totals possibly reaching about three-quarters of an inch, creating the potential for rockslides and localized flooding in the canyon.

Crews will evaluate the street once conditions can be safely assessed and will reopen the street when it is deemed safe for travel, Caltrans said.

The closure could remain in place beyond the initial morning hours, depending on storm impacts.

Officials cautioned that wet weather — particularly in burn scar zones — can quickly create hazardous driving conditions.

Drivers were advised to consider alternate routes, allow extra time for travel and use headlights during rain.

Ahead of the storm, crews placed equipment, set up barriers, and strengthened work areas along Topanga Canyon Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway between Sunset Boulevard and Carbon Beach Terrace.

The affected portion of Topanga Canyon Boulevard is part of continuing repair work related to damage from the Palisades Fire and recent winter storms and is typically closed overnight from midnight to 5 a.m. daily.
