The South Coast Air Quality Management District Wednesday issued a windblown dust advisory in the Coachella Valley.

The dust advisory was in effect from 1 p.m. Wednesday through 7 a.m Thursday, the agency reported.

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for the Coachella Valley from 11 a.m. Wednesday through 9 a.m. Friday.

Air quality in northern Cathedral City reached “very unhealthy” levels Wednesday morning due to windblown dust, according to AQMD officials.

Conditions were expected to peak around 4 p.m. Wednesday in the northwestern Coachella Valley, while air quality in Indio was forecast to range from good to “unhealthy for sensitive groups.”

Officials said wind gusts are expected to diminish after 10 p.m.

Residents near the area impacted by dust or ash were advised to limit exposure by remaining indoors with windows and doors closed, avoid vigorous physical activity and use air conditioning or air purifiers to reduce exposure.

More information on affected areas and current air quality can be found at aqmd.gov/AQImap.
