A man who allegedly fired at police was shot dead in an officer-involved shooting Sunday in South Gate.
The shooting occurred about 1:30 a.m. today, after South Gate police officers tried to pull over a vehicle for a traffic offense. The driver sped off, prompting a vehicle pursuit, according to the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
The chase was halted due to poor driving conditions, but the suspect, heading east on Tweedy Avenue, crashed the vehicle at the eastern end of the street, next to the Los Angeles River at Burtis Street, officials said.
Both the driver and a passenger ran from the scene, but the passenger was caught.
The driver allegedly fired at a pursuing officer and was subsequently killed in an officer-involved shooting, according to the sheriff’s department.
It as not made clear who fired the shot, but he was struck in the upper body and pronounced dead at the scene.
His firearm was recovered, the sheriff’s department reported. No officers were injured.
Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives were assisting South Gate police in the shooting investigation.
