Violent crime and property crime declined slightly last week and overall crime is down by 2.5% compared to 2023, police officials said Tuesday.
During Tuesday’s Board of Police Commission meeting, the Los Angeles Police Department reported that as of May 18 violent crime is down 2.4% and property crime is down 3.3% compared to the same period last year.
Homicides have been trending downward since the week ending March 16, with a year-to-date decrease from 13.8% to just over 4.2%. There have been 113 homicides citywide this year, with 35 of those deaths being gang-related. In 2023, 59 of the 106 homicides reported were gang-related, and in 2022, 73 of the 141 homicides reported were gang-related.
Overall, the city has experienced a yearly increase of 6.6%, or seven more homicides compared to 2023, but a 19.9% decrease compared to 2022.
Crimes where victims have been shot total 399 as of May 18, a decrease of 47 compared to this time in 2023. Of those 399 victims, 150 were reported to the LAPD’s South Bureau.
Robberies increased between 8.2% and 13.4% over the last seven weeks, officials said. Robberies with a firearm, however, have decreased since the week ending March 9.
Total robberies are up by 13.4% compared to 2023, but down by 4.5% compared to 2022.
Motor vehicle thefts decreased between 9.6% and 5% starting in March, but this month these crimes rose 5.6% compared to the same time in 2023. The top vehicles that continue to be stolen are Kias, Chevrolets and Hyundais.
