Los Angeles Convention Center

Is the Los Angeles Convention Center too old and too small to attract large gatherings?

The Los Angeles City Council selected an architectural team Tuesday to design an overhaul of the Los Angeles Convention Center.

City staff were instructed to negotiate details of the contract with HMS Architects and Populous. The team’s proposal won a design competition.

The project comes after a failed attempt to attract a National Football League team to play at the Los Angeles Convention Center site. City officials are now focusing just on updating and expanding the event venue to attract larger conventions to downtown Los Angeles.

The HMS and Populous team was one of three that submitted designs with a $350 million budget.

City staff were also instructed to report back on possible financing options for the project.
