A 22-year-old Downey man pulled from the ocean in San Diego has died from his injuries, authorities said Sunday.
Azfar Alam was pronounced dead on Saturday afternoon, according to the San Diego County medical examiner’s office.
He was found unconscious in the water at La Jolla Cove on Friday evening, along with a teenage girl who was also unresponsive in the water, authorities said.
The girl responded to resuscitation efforts, according to San Diego Lifeguards who say it’s unclear how the two ended up in the water.
Lt. Andy Lerum of San Diego Lifeguards told City News Service that high surf and Comic-Con drew more people than usual to San Diego beaches this weekend.
Alam was a third-year computer science major at the University of California, San Diego, according to his LinkedIn profile. The school’s campus is located in La Jolla, near La Jolla Cove where he was found in the water.
