Seal Beach lifeguards put up signs Wednesday warning beachgoers of shark sightings in the area.
The Marine Safety Department sent its lifeguards to investigate after receiving video footage of a shark on Tuesday, but saw none, Marine Safety Department Lt. Chris Pierce said.
“Today, they witnessed it themselves this morning,” Pierce said.
After consulting with experts, the lifeguards decided to warn beachgoers with signs, but not close the beach, Pierce said.
“Because of the size of the sharks and the activity they were engaged in, it was determined to just put up signs,” Pierce said.
The sharks that were sighted are juveniles about 5 to 6 feet, and at that age, they feast more on smaller fish and not bigger prey such as humans, Pierce said.
“Up until eight feet long, they eat smaller fish,” Pierce said.
