A 23-year-old man was ordered Friday to stand trial for a woman’s stabbing death during a dispute over a parking space at a Santa Fe Springs swap meet, but the case against a 19-year-old woman who also had been charged in the killing was dismissed.
A judge in Norwalk bound Reggie Cervantes over for trial on one count each of murder and assault with a deadly weapon, but co-defendant Brenda Jasmine Rangel, 19, was not ordered to stand trial and was ordered released, according to Sarah Ardalani of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The case stemmed from the Oct. 17 stabbing death of Elizabeth Yanez, 43, who reportedly got into an argument while looking for a parking spot with her two adult children.
The prosecution alleges that Cervantes got out of his car and unsuccessfully tried to stab Yanez’s son and then stabbed Yanez, who was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where she was pronounced dead.
Cervantes and Rangel were arrested a day later.
Cervantes is due back in a Norwalk courtroom Feb. 27 for arraignment, according to Ardalani.
