Officers fatally shot a suspect about a mile north of the Long Beach Police Department’s downtown headquarters, authorities said Sunday.
The shooting occurred at 9:30 p.m. Saturday around 15th Street and Magnolia Avenue, said LBPD spokeswoman Arantxa Chavarria.
The suspect was allegedly walking in the area pointing a handgun at multiple passing vehicles and at least four different people, the Long Beach Police Department reported. A firearm was recovered at the scene and no victims suffered any injuries.
“Officers responded to the area within minutes due to five recent shootings that occurred in a five-block radius since January 1,” according to a department statement. “Arriving officers located the suspect walking northbound, who matched the detailed description provided by calling parties.
“Officers observed the male adult suspect with a firearm on the west side of the park, still brandishing his firearm,” the statement said. “Officers gave multiple commands for the suspect to drop his firearm, the suspect refused and an officer-involved shooting occurred.”
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Chavarria said.
Long Beach police homicide detectives urged anyone with information regarding the incident to call them at 562-570-7244 or 800-222-8477.
