A man who was an innocent bystander was killed when a teenage boy pulled out a gun and fired it during a fight at a Cinco de Mayo carnival in Anaheim, authorities said Monday.

The fight broke out among a group of juveniles just after 10 p.m. Sunday when the annual carnival at La Palma Park was shutting down, said Anaheim police Sgt. Shane Carringer. The park is at Harbor Boulevard and La Palma Park Way.

A 17-year-old boy pulled out a gun and fired a round, hitting the man who had nothing to do with the fight, Carringer said.

Paramedics rushed the man to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, the sergeant said. His name has not been released.

Officers assigned to the carnival heard the shot and were able to rush to the scene and detain several juveniles including the suspected shooter, Carringer said.

It was the 50th anniversary of the city’s Cinco de Mayo carnival, he said.
