A convicted felon pleaded guilty Tuesday and was sentenced to nine years in prison, or about time he has already served behind bars, for attacking the son of a “Real Housewives of Orange County” cast member while the two were in Orange County Jail among other crimes.
Jose Jesus Guzman attacked Joshua Waring while the two were in custody Oct. 9, 2019. Waring’s attorney at the time, Joel Garson, said Guzman attacked Waring as he was returning to his cell after making a phone call on his legal case.
Waring needed 20 staples, as well as stitches and butterfly bandages on his face, to close his wounds, Garson said. Waring, 34, is serving a two-year sentence in prison on drug charges and is scheduled to be released in July.
Guzman wrapped up several cases on Tuesday, including the attack on Waring.
Guzman was given credit for 3,588 days in custody.
In the Waring attack he pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a deadly weapon by a prisoner, both felonies, as well as a misdemeanor count of destroying or concealing evidence. He also admitted a sentencing enhancement for inflicting great bodily injury on Waring.
Guzman also pleaded guilty to a felony count of possession of a deadly weapon by a prisoner on June 27, 2018, and a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest. He also pleaded guilty to a felony count of possessing suboxone in custody.
Guzman has a lengthy criminal history. He pleaded guilty Dec. 24, 2018, to two counts of domestic battery causing injury with a prior conviction, criminal threats, two counts of criminal threats and a count of assault with a deadly weapon, all felonies, with sentencing enhancements for the personal use of a deadly weapon and causing great bodily injury.
Guzman pleaded guilty Aug. 10, 2011, to four counts each of corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats and single counts each of car theft, leading police on a chase and kidnapping with sentencing enhancements for personal use of a deadly weapon and inflicting great bodily injury.
