A carjacking suspect was taken into custody Thursday after initially eluding law enforcement in Torrance.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department advised officers from the Torrance Police Department that deputies were in pursuit of a carjacking suspect who had stolen several vehicles around 12:50 p.m. Thursday, according to Torrance Police Department spokesman Sgt. Ron Salary.
The suspect entered a parking structure at the Del Amo Fashion Center a short time later, where officers located a male suspect inside the carjacked vehicle, described as a silver Prius, leaving the Del Amo Fashion Center.
“Due to the seriousness of the crime (two carjackings and one stolen vehicle) and the ongoing threat to the public, Torrance police officers initiated a pursuit,” Salary said in a statement.
Salary said an officer intervened and struck the vehicle near Vermont Avenue and Sepulveda Boulevard, resulting in a pedestrian also being hit.
The suspect was later arrested after fleeing on foot. He was taken into custody by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Officers interviewed the carjacking victim and the woman struck during the pursuit after the termination of the pursuit, Salary said.
The pedestrian refused treatment by paramedics at the scene. Officers later discovered that the woman went to a hospital, Salary said.
Her condition remains unknown.
Anyone with information regarding the carjacking or pursuit was urged to call the Torrance Police Department at 310-328-3456.
