Union Pacific Railroad investigators Wednesday were trying to determine why a 22-year-old woman wandered onto tracks in Jurupa Valley, where she was struck and killed by a train.
Maraya Espinoza of Jurupa Valley was fatally injured at 7:45 p.m. Sunday on the UP tracks paralleling Van Buren Boulevard, just north of Bellegrave Avenue, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.
Railroad officials said Espinoza was standing or walking along the tracks when a southbound train hit her.
The freighter immediately stopped. Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the location within 10 minutes and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Train traffic was held up over an hour while coroner’s officials examined the location, along with UP Police agents.
They’re still attempting to confirm why Espinoza was on the tracks.
