“Superman” easily kept the top spot at the box office in its second weekend of release, grossing $57.2 million to lead all films in North America, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
The latest big-screen saga of the Man of Steel stars relative newcomer David Corenswet in the title role, and was written and directed by James Gunn for DC Studios. The cast also includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
“Jurassic World Rebirth” took in $23.4 million Friday through Sunday in its third weekend in theaters, Comscore reported.
“I Know What You Did Last Summer” opened in third place with $13 million. Columbia’s reboot of the 1997 slasher film features appearances from Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar, who all appeared in the 1997 original.
The animated “Smurfs” opened in fourth place with $11 million, followed by “F1 The Movie,” which took in $9.6 million in its fourth weekend.
“How to Train Your Dragon” was next with $5.3 million in its sixth week in theaters in the United States and Canada.
Director Ari Aster’s “Eddington,” a pointed social drama about the events of 2020 starring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal, opened with $4.2 million for sixth place.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “Elio” ($2 million), “Lilo & Stitch” ($1.5 million) and “28 Years Later” ($1.3 million).
