A pile of several hundred propane tanks was engulfed in flames and smoke for hours Friday at a business in Lancaster.
The fire started with a propane truck about 2:30 p.m. Friday at a business in the 42500 block of North Eighth Street East, Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Fred Fielding told City News Service.
“Several hundred” tanks were either on fire or nearby, Fielding said.
Firefighters opted to battle the blaze defensively, training water on the fire from all directions and working to protect nearby structures while the fire burns itself out, Fielding said.
Video from the scene on ABC7 showed the flames and black smoke coming from the center of a pile of tanks scattered around a work yard.
KTLA 5 reported at 4:30 p.m. that an explosion sent at least one tank flying over a fence, and that while the intensity of the fire was reduced, a building nearby was on fire.
The fire was out at 5:42 p.m., Fielding said. There were no injuries.
