Parts of Los Angeles County were experiencing triple-digit temperatures Saturday as a high-pressure system fueled another hot weekend.
An extreme heat warning was in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday in the Antelope Valley. A less severe heat advisory was in place until 8 p.m. Sunday for the Santa Clarita, San Gabriel and San Fernando valleys, along with the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, Calabasas, Agoura Hills, the San Gabriel Mountains and the inland coast including downtown.
“Most areas are expected to see peak temperatures today, with highs in the upper 90s to 109 across the interior (warmest in the Antelope Valley), 90 to 103 degrees in coastal valleys, and 75 to 90 degrees across the coastal plain,” the National Weather Service said Saturday.
Saturday’s highs reached 90 degrees in downtown Los Angeles, 99 in Van Nuys, 102 in Santa Clarita, 105 in Lancaster and 90 in Anaheim.
Forecasters cited a 10% to 15% chance of some afternoon/evening showers or thunderstorms over the weekend, mainly in mountain areas.
“If thunderstorms do occur, there is the possibility that dry lightning may result, and may cause fire starts, adding to the fire weather concern,” according to the NWS.
Health officials advised people to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day and check up on relatives and neighbors.
The public was also urged to never leave children or pets in parked vehicles for even a minute, as temperatures inside vehicles can reach deadly levels in virtually no time.
At the coast, high astronomical tides were expected to affect low-lying beaches south of Point Conception with the possibility of minor coastal flooding starting with the evening high tide Monday and continuing through at least Wednesday. Predicted tide heights of up to 7.5 feet are expected between about 8 and 10 p.m. each evening. Beaches most susceptible to potential minor coastal flooding issues include those around Point Dume and near Long Beach.
Temperatures are expected to drop a few degrees on Sunday and gradually decline further throughout next week, with highs about 10-12 degrees cooler by next weekend.
