Flames so intense that firefighters had to battle them from a distance destroyed a house in Santa Clarita Saturday.

The fire was reported just after 1 p.m. Saturday in the 29100 block of Flowerpark Drive, Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Brian Kight told City News Service.

The house was already sagging when the first firefighters arrived at the scene, so they could not fight the blaze from inside or on the roof, Kight said. They opted to take up defensive positions and “surround and drown” the flames while protecting surrounding homes.

Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution, he said.

As of 4 p.m., the home was still too hot to conduct a primary search to ensure no one was inside or to begin an investigation to determine the cause, Kight said.

No injuries were immediately reported.
