A Desert Hot Springs man with a past felony conviction suspected of fatally shooting a 30-year-old woman within the city was arrested Tuesday.

Officers responded to a report of a dead person at about 5:15 p.m. Sunday in the area of Mission Creek and Worsley roads, according to the Desert Hot Springs Police Department.

Authorities revealed that a woman was shot and killed around 1:30 p.m. the same day for unknown reasons. The victim was later identified as Brianna Chavez of Los Angeles.

Aaron Espinoza, 29, was identified as the suspect and was taken into custody Tuesday at the Arizona/Mexico border with the assistance of the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office Gang Impact team, the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force and the San Luis Police Department.

Espinoza has been charged with murder, child endangerment and being a felon in possession of a firearm, police said.

He was expected to be extradited from Arizona.
