A man was severely injured Wednesday when a vehicle veered off a Long Beach roadway and wound up in several feet of water.
According to the Long Beach Fire Department, a man and a woman in their 60s were traveling south on Studebaker Road near Loynes Drive at about 4:20 a.m. Wednesday when their pickup somehow crashed through a center divider and fell into water beneath the street just off the Cerritos Channel.
Fire officials said the woman — a passenger in the vehicle — was able to crawl out of the truck and wade to shore, where she flagged down help. The male driver was ejected from the vehicle in the crash and suffered life-threatening injuries, according to the fire department.
The couple were both taken to a hospital. CBS LA reported from the crash scene that the man died at the hospital, but fire officials could not immediately confirm that report.
The woman’s condition was unknown.
