LAX officials Friday outlined plans for a nearly $290 million federal grant that will fund roadway and terminal access improvements.
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced the award Tuesday as part of its Airport Infrastructure Grants program.
According to Los Angeles World Airports, the funding will support the Airfield and Terminal Modernization Program Roadway Improvements Project, which is designed to improve access to the airport, enhance terminal connectivity and prepare LAX for future passenger demand.
The project includes new airport entrance roadways intended to separate airport traffic from surrounding local traffic. Officials said the improvements are expected to reduce congestion on Sepulveda Boulevard and provide more direct access to airport terminals.
“These latest improvements will enhance accessibility and reduce traffic congestion while also supporting jobs, spurring economic growth, and advancing our long-term vision for LAX,” Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement.
John Ackerman, chief executive officer of Los Angeles World Airports, said the project is part of the airport’s long-term modernization effort.
“This is an investment in the future of LAX and the experience we want every traveler to have from the moment they arrive,” Ackerman said. “As we continue our transformation, projects like these help us move people more safely and efficiently, while bringing to life our broader vision of an airport that reflects Los Angeles.”
Hawthorne Municipal Airport and Brackett Field in La Verne also received grants through the Airport Infrastructure Grants program. Hawthorne was awarded $700,771 for taxiway lighting rehabilitation, while Brackett Field received $862,695 for terminal improvements.
