One driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence during a DUI patrol in Menifee, police announced Tuesday.
Menifee Police Department officers conducted the patrol from 5 p.m. Monday to 1 a.m. Tuesday at various locations throughout the city, targeting drivers suspected of being impaired.
Officers stopped several motorists for vehicle code violations and issued citations, according to the department. One driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. The location of the arrest was not disclosed.
The MPD reminded the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol.
“Some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving,” the department said. “Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving or operating heavy machinery, which includes driving a car. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.”
Drivers charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties as well as a suspended license.
Funding for the DUI patrol was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
