A bomb threat prompted a lockdown of South High School in Torrance Wednesday, along with evacuations of some residences nearby.
Around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, the Torrance Police Department Communications Center received a call reporting “multiple bombs” on the South High campus, police said. The caller hung up on dispatchers, and officers quickly responded to the campus to begin a search.
The campus was placed on lockdown.
“Officers escorted pedestrians in the area to a safe distance and evacuated several nearby residences as a precaution,” police said in a statement. “Because of its proximity to South High, Richardson Middle School has also taken precautionary measures.”
Initial assessments did not turn up any suspicious devices, but police conducted a thorough search of the campus throughout the afternoon. Students at the school remained on the campus, and “will not be released until the campus has been fully searched and determined safe,” police said in a statement late Wednesday afternoon.
Parents were directed to park at a nearby Ross store parking lot on Pacific Coast Highway to wait for students to be released.
